The Color Purple Response

After reading Alice Walker's novel, "The Color Purple", I can truly say that I have mixed reviews about the novel. The novel itself was told in a very creative way, as it was told through a compilation of letters to God. This creative method of story-telling, however, meant that some scenes were explicitly told in graphic detail. Understandably, the letters were written in such a way, so that the story is more concise and enjoyable. After watching the film adaptation of the novel, There were several striking differences. One is the mood the movie produced. The being of the novel presented a somber mood, compared to the movie's extremely depressive mood of the same event. Another difference between the novel and the film adaptation are overly dramatic scenes. The charm of the novel was how it was told through explicit details and rarely did it vaguely express the feeling of the main character, Celie. However, in the film, Celie feelings are implied as though someone else is telling the story she has experienced. My final point about the novel will be about symbolism; Most notably, the color purple itself. Purple represents beauty, peace, and devotion; All of which were displayed in the novel. Case in point, I admire how the narrator, Celie, took the reader on a journey of perilous circumstances and overcomes the odds established as a child. It was merely destined for her to remain the women she once was; But through motivation, inspiration, and interactions with other characters, she found refuge in which she was a refugee.
